What pressure can you subject your heart to? The best gift you can ever give to yourself is a good health , this includes a well controlled BP. Managing BP involves lifestyle changes and in some , cases medications by your healthcare provider! So choose wisely. Always a goal to achieve and maintain a good BP of reading systolic (top number) less than 120 mm/hg and diastolic (bottom number) less than 80 . I talk a lot about lifestyle modification and truly that is the trick to managing most disease conditions in this case BP. Treatment and medication management! Like I illustrated before , some individuals need medications to help control and manage HBP, so check in with your healthcare provider , donโt resist , or be in denial, or support your HIgh BP with myths! High BP is a silent killer ! There are several types of meds for BP treatment .This is dependent on various factors and clinical guidelines and how we respond to treatment regimen. Meds categories! 1. Diuretics (water pills) such as Hydrochlorothiazide, lasix 2. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (lisinopril, meds ending with โrilโ) 3. Calcium channel blocker such as amlodipine, nifedipine (meds ending with โine) 4. Angiotensin II receptor blockers such as valsartan, olmesartan, losartan (meds ending with โtan) 5. Beta blockers such as metoprolol, carvedilol, labetalol (meds ending with โlol) Did you know that ?? Just like any other medication ,all of the mentioned above have side effects . For example 1. ACE inhibitors , some individuals will experience persistent cough! Check in with your pcp if you start coughing uncontrollably . This cough is dry and you will differentiate from acute viral/bacterial infection as this acute illness cough usually wet chest congestion. 2. Calcium channel blockers - may cause swelling of feet , dizziness , bradycardia(slow heart rate) 3. Angiotensin receptor blockers may cause high potassium levels, dizziness 4. Beta blockers -dizziness, cold hands and feet. Warning do not abruptly stop this medication if you have been taking for a while , why? This can increase heart rate risking heart attack, palpitations .Check in with your pcp! Donโt take matters in your own hands ! 5. Diuretics , frequent urination, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance FYI , you have every right ! When you go to your pcp and and they start you on medication , it is your right to ask what kind of medication, how it works and why that is most suitable medication to help manage your BP !! Be your own health advocate !! Bottom line!! Take reasonable steps in your youth, formidable healthy habits to help prevent high blood pressure and or manage BP!!
