First of all, receive my warm welcome to the Health News Corner, and letโs dive in, shall we?
This is the most basic approach to disease prevention, treatment, and management.
It truly is the center of prevention, unless the disease process is hereditary, which can pose a real challenge to prevent due to DNA linkage. However, if a basic lifestyle approach is addressed, it can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall wellbeing. As a rule of thumb, these changes require small but manageable steps and approaches. Great question!! What really are the basic steps towards a healthier you? Multiple research studies and simple personal health behaviors point to nutrition and diet, physical activity, sleep, and stress management plus no harmful habits!

1. Focus on healthy nutrition while avoiding and/or limiting highly processed foods, for example canned goods and even frozen foods. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables -best steamed, grilled, boiled, or eaten raw after proper cleaning. Donโt mess with nutritional content by deep frying vegetables or adding additional sugar to fresh fruits. No stop!
2. Limit highly processed carbohydrates! I know, I know, I am asking for too much, but with your utmost health at the center, limit bread, rice, pasta, ugali, etc. These are good-tasting foods but full of empty calories by nature of being processed. You can choose whole grains, sparingly. Mind your portions, can you?
3. Eat healthy protein and fats! That chicken, salmon, fish (I see you -donโt deep fry), just grill or bake. (How many times did I say grill?) Avoid red meats like a plague, mainly because of cholesterol -unless you are eating Wagyu, which even costs an arm and a leg.
4. Limit processed sugars and salt! You really donโt have to add sugar to your tea, coffee, or cocoa. If you have to, then try honey if your allergies allow, but very limited. Your sweet tooth will land you in health trouble, so be in control!
5. Do you drink enough water? Even the recommended eight glasses? Really, that is not too much to ask if you expect healthy kidneys, clear skin, and no constipation, right? Water is the most basic component that we need.
