We, the digitallyโconnected Generation Z in Kenya, wish to draw urgent attention to the forthcoming 2027 general elections. Beneficiaries of President Kibakiโs free primary education policy and empowered by global internet access, we represent a cohort that is wellโeducated, informed and committed to democratic governance
For decades, leadership positions have been occupied by individuals who appear to regard power as a permanent entitlement. This mindset has manifested in demands for unearned respect, suppression of accountability, and resort to police violence when challenged. Such actions undermine the principles of servant leadership that many Kenyans now demand.
The current moment is pivotal: 2027 will be a referendum between leaders who aspire to serve the public and those who seek to maintain oppressive and extractive practices. The phrase โTuko Kadiโ (We Are Ready) is not a fleeting socialโmedia slogan; it reflects a sustained resolve to engage constructively with decisionโmakers.
Our generation does not seek handouts. We present viable ideas to build an inclusive Kenya. We reject the narrative that positions us as โleaders of tomorrowโ while our nation is being compromised by corruption and poor economic policies.
Recent eventsโincluding attempts to overtax citizens, failure to create jobs, and refusal to engage in dialogueโhave compelled us to exercise constitutional rights. While the State responded with brutality, including reported killings and disappearments of youths, we have returned to democratic processes. Massive voter registration drives are underway, a move that political elites, accustomed to rigging, did not anticipate.
However, there are concerning signs that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) may be suppressing voter registration efforts. This is unacceptable. We issue a clear warning: any attempt to impede civic participation or maintain power through suppression will be documented and may compel further action.
We call on all leaders, the IEBC, and relevant authorities to:
1. Facilitate unhindered voter registration and ensure transparency in all electoral processes.
2. Engage in genuine dialogue with young Kenyans to address grievances and incorporate innovative solutions.
3. Reject violence and intimidation tactics, protecting the safety and rights of all citizens.
The choice is ours: we can address these issues now while dialogue remains possible, or we risk allowing circumstances to force an undesirable outcome later.
Time for change is now.
